Own the top half
Wrap the hands around the top half of the ball, not the sides or bottom. That kills the spin and lets you bring it straight into the chest.

Body is the second barrier
Shift your feet to get chest behind the line of the shot before catching. If the hands fail, the ball hits you, not the net.

Elbows in, not flared
Keep elbows slightly bent and inside the frame of the ball. Flared elbows leave a hole for the shot to squeeze through the middle.
